The town centre for the Sanya development is inspired by the traditional concepts of courtyards and streets in China. Both typologies of courtyards and streets give scale to cities. Famous typologies of “Si He Yuan” and “Hutongs” in Beijing and Shanghai’s “Longtangs” are such examples. Also inspired by Chinese paintings of cities and towns and famous narrative, “Invisible Cities” from a writer, Italo Calvino, we envision and choreograph our courtyards and streets to be “JOURNEYS” to enhance varied memories and experiences to our town guests as they journey within the spaces or different parts of the town centre. No single block in the town centre is the same. Drawing references from Asian architecture, we design every block with a suitable typology that celebrates the Asian flavor and knitted with intimate street scales. In addition, every block targets different target group and has different functions. Here, we celebrate the diversity of cities.
